Woven Together

He Is Still Working

For we are God’s masterpiece.

He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Ephesians 2: 10

I heard a story about an older man in a foreign country who was a master weaver of rugs.  Many sought him to create customized mats.  It would take years to develop one carpet.  He had a young granddaughter, and she wanted so badly to make rugs like her grandfather.  On her 6th birthday, he gave her his two favorite weaving needles. She begged him to teach her to weave. The grandfather knew she wasn't ready, but her persistence won him over. So, they sat and began to weave together. The little girl would fumble the needles, and her grandfather would look over and smile. Others would watch in curiosity about what they would create together, knowing the little girl wasn't ready.  After some time, they completed their unique creation. Everyone marveled at the masterpiece!  It indeed was a wonderful piece of art. People began to proclaim that the young girl had the same gift as her grandfather and was a prodigy.  Some said we watched her struggle to keep up and make mistakes. How is it possible that this rug is still this beautiful?  The grandfather responded that he had already considered the mistakes she would make and reweaved them into the carpet.

So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together for good, for we are his lovers who have been called to fulfill his designed purpose.  For he knew all about us before we were born and he destined us from the beginning to share the likeness of his Son…

Romans 8:28-29

Isn’t it great to know that God has already considered every aspect of our lives before birth?  Every mistake, every attack, every misfortune is known and not just known, but he has been prepared for them so that he can reweave them into His designed purpose.  It makes me think of that meme that says, “When God put a calling on your life, He already factored in your stupidity.”  That’s good news because although we try to do all the right things, we sometimes mess things up.  And in case no one has told you, It’s okay to get it wrong.  Romans 8:27 says that God is the searcher of the heart and that He knows FULLY our longings or desires.  He knows our heart’s intentions.  Please make no mistake; I’m not speaking of sin. Although I believe God reweaves those things, too.

The simple encouragement I want to give you today is to not beat yourself up over those mistakes.   Do you remember the song we all probably sang in Sunday School?   “He’s still working on me, to make me what I ought to be… How loving and patient He must be, He’s still working on me.”  He’s still working on me, and He’s still working on you too.  You may not think your life will be a masterpiece, but just wait He’s still weaving your story, and that’s something to be thankful for!
